6 reasons to ditch the sippy cup 🚫

Hi Reader,

I always thought babies drink out of the breast or bottle then go to a sippy cup and someday just figure out how to drink out of an open cup…

…all of that changed when my friend Dawn Winkelmann, who is an SLP, introduced me to the benefits of open-cup drinking (and the drawbacks of sippy cups).

In today’s new episode of the podcast Dawn is running down a list of 6 Reasons to Skip the Sippy Cup.

This is episode 40 of the Baby-Led Weaning podcast called 6 Reasons to Skip the Sippy Cup with Dawn Winkelmann, MS, CCC-SLP. You can listen and read more on the shownotes page for this episode located here.

Sippy Cup Stress

If you’re stressed that your baby won’t know how to drink from an open cup or will be dehydrated if they’re not drinking enough…Dawn has some great tips on helping your baby bypass the skippy cup stage.

Listen to learn:

  • How sippy cups were invented by adults, for adults and they’re not developmentally ok for babies
  • Why sippy cups impede feeding and speech milestones…and what to do instead
  • How to help your baby move from the breast or bottle right to an open cup, no sippy cup needed

I love getting to interview Dawn - she’s one of my best friends and every time I talk to her I learn something new…

…this time she blew my mind about suctioning plastic from a sippy cup out of a hospitalized kid’s mouth 😳

Happy Open Cup Drinking!!

Happy Feeding,

I’m a Registered Dietitian, college nutrition professor and mom of seven who specializes in infant feeding and baby-led weaning. Like many parents, I struggled with spoon-feeding my oldest until I discovered baby-led weaning - a natural, hands-on approach that lets your baby build a foundational love of food. Starting solid foods can be stressful, but I’ll help cut through the noise with a proven strategy for helping babies master baby-led weaning.

Hi Reader, Did you know that SESAME was the most recent potentially allergenic food added to the Top 9 allergenic foods list? Sesame may be the newest food on the Top 9 list - but many parents are still scared to offer this food to their baby 😱 In today’s new episode of the baby-led weaning podcast I’m covering “Sesame: How to Introduce Your Baby to this Potentially Allergenic Food.” This is episode 43 of the Baby-Led Weaning with Katie Ferraro podcast. Hi Reader, Question: What do babies drink after they turn one? Answer: ….water, breastmilk or cow’s milk, right? Yes…but…what if we are wrong about the cow’s milk stuff? Sophie Egan is the author of How to Be a Conscious Eater and she joined me on today’s new episode of the baby-led weaning podcast to talk about the role of cow’s milk for toddlers: why do we do it and what if we didn’t? This is episode 42 of the podcast “Is Cow’s Milk a Must for Toddlers? With Sophie Eagan” and you can listen...

Hi Reader, I remember the first time one of my quadruplets had a shellfish reaction… We were at a Super Bowl party and he helped himself to some ceviche - which resulted in hives on his face and neck about an hour later. Offering your baby potentially allergenic foods like shellfish can be scary… …but avoiding shellfish entirely may actually increase the risk of allergy later on. In today’s new episode of the baby-led weaning podcast I’m covering Shellfish: How to Introduce Your Baby to this...
